"Laura, I don’t even know if you’ll ever see this. It's been so long that sometimes I wonder where time has gone. The roads and paths we've taken in our lives have made us who we are, and I would like to think that the moments we spent together in that long ago have helped to shape me into the man I am today. I recently retired from the Army and looking back have felt that I left many loose ends or parts in my life that I have never come to full closure with. My relationship with you is one of those areas. There are many feelings inside me that still yearn or ache for the things that could have been. I've tried to tell myself over these many years that it was never meant to be, but you were very important in my life and I just wanted you to know that I never harbored bad feelings for you. You’ve always known how I felt about you, or at least I thought you knew. There is nothing on this earth that I would not have done to be in your heart and I in yours. Things being the way they are, I just wanted to let you know that you have always carried a piece of my heart and if you ever by chance happen to remember me, that you won't be hurt by what you find in your memory. - GENE"
